Kerry Madsen – Back in the Midwest!

(Bill W) September 14, 2012 – Kerry Madsen and the Keneric Racing #29 team are back in the Midwest after a successful west coast trip saw them pick up a pair of wins at Skagit (WA) Speedway and in Lebanon, Oregon. Tonight, the World of Outlaws compete at the Clay County Fairgrounds Speedway in Spencer, Iowa and tomorrow night they move east to the Deer Creek Speedway near Spring Valley, Minnesota.

The Gold Cup of Champions was held at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California last Thursday through Saturday. The first two nights saw a pair of DNF’s. “We just qualified badly both nights (26th quick on Thursday and 23rd quick on Friday),” says Kerry. “Thursday we had an awesome run going, starting last and driving up to ninth. We had magneto problems, so we DNFed there.”

Friday night saw Kerry finish fifth in his heat and qualify for the main, but it didn’t last long. “We just missed it and struggled in qualifying. Then we tipped over in the feature, and that was two DNF’s and no points.”

Saturday night’s finale went much better. Kerry started sixth in the B main based on his points and drove to third to qualify for the finale, in which he drove from 19th to 13th. “We moved forward in the B,” he says. “We had a nice car in the race. We moved up to thirteenth. It isn’t where we wanted to finish, but we started deep and we were able to advance.”

The best finish of the week came at Calistoga (CA) Speedway. “We qualified well (4th),” says Kerry. “We were good in the Dash (which he won). We just lost on the start of the feature. Donny (Schatz) got me on the start. We got close in traffic a couple of times. There was a red flag with about twelve laps to go, and it was kind of a one-lane deal. If there were traffic, we may have been able to do something with him, but Donny in open air was too tough. We were still good with second.”

The west coast trip ended at Antioch (CA) Speedway on Monday. The St. Mary’s, New South Wales driver had a nice run. “We had a good racecar (12th to 7th),” says Kerry. “Anytime you can go forward at a place like that, it’s a good thing. It’s really tight and tough to pass there. We had a really good car.”

Kerry is excited to be back near his headquarters in Iowa this weekend. “We’re definitely happy to be back,” he says. “We’ve been good at Spencer (he ran fourth earlier this year), and Deer Creek is one of my favorite tracks.”
