(Bill W) August 26, 2013 – Kerry Madsen and the Keneric Racing #29 team was awarded after having a strong car the last couple of months with a win at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Friday night. A third place finish after leading much of the finale followed on Saturday night, and now the World of Outlaws will hit the west coast for nine racing events in ten nights starting Friday at Skagit Speedway in Washington.
The winning night in Edmonton started well. “We qualified well, fifth,” says Kerry. “We really weren’t good in the heat (finishing fourth) race. We made some changes and went out and were really good in the Dash (winning).”
Kerry would start on the pole. “We didn’t change anything from the Dash,” he says. “The track was really slick. We got the lead and I was running the top in one and two and the bottom of three and four. (Cody) Darrah was pushing me all the way. There was a restart and he nearly got by me on the bottom of one and two. There was a crash that brought that one back.”
The St. Mary’s, New South Wales, Australia native changed his tactics. “From that point, I ran the bottom the rest of the way,” says Kerry. “I think (Donny) Schatz got close, but I was making sure I hit my marks and didn’t make a mistake at that point.”
The win was welcome to the team and they went into the finale on Saturday, looking for a sweep. Kerry timed in 11th, won his heat, and won the Dash for the second night in a row, putting him on the pole for the main event. “The track was a bit similar the second night,” he says. “We got the lead again. Joey (Saldana) raced me early, and then I moved to the bottom. I spent most of the race down there, and Schatz was pushing me. He actually got by me once and I passed him back in traffic.”
Leading with a handful of laps remaining, Kerry saw an unwelcome caution come out. “I thought we were going to be alright there until we had a restart with seven to go,” he says. “I’m not sure if we sealed a tire or lost the handle on the car, but we weren’t as good. Schatz and (Brad) Sweet drove around me.”
Kerry reflected on the third place finish. “I think we should have moved to the top a little quicker, but when you’re leading you keep trying to do your thing,” he says. “If we had gone non-stop, we may have had a shot, but we had a good car and an awesome weekend.”
He will carry momentum into the western swing, starting Friday and Saturday in Skagit.
“It’s going to be insane,” says Kerry of nine races in ten nights in Washington, Oregon and California. “It’s going to be tough for everyone, so we’re in the same boat. If you’re looking for a break, this is the wrong time!”
