Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 14, 2018) – Kerry Madsen was on pace for his sixth career top-10 result during the famed Knoxville Nationals last weekend when disaster struck in the closing laps.

The Big Game Motorsports driver earned his way into the 58th annual 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores for the 12th time in his career thanks to a strong preliminary night. He qualified second quickest overall out of more than 40 drivers and maneuvered from eighth to fourth place in a heat race on Wednesday.

Madsen started the main event on the outside of the fourth row and had just passed for a spot into the top five when a caution came out.

“I think I overheated the tires,” he said. “We lost all grip and the last three or four laps I couldn’t get anything done.”

Madsen held on for a ninth-place result, which put him sixth in overall points once the two preliminary nights concluded. That locked him into the sixth starting position for Saturday’s 50-lap main event, meaning the only competition he had on Friday was the SPEED SPORT World Challenge. The 20-lap race was inverted by 14 and since Madsen had earned the most points out of the drivers who qualified for the special event, he started on the outside of the seventh row.

“We had a great car,” he said. “It was different than the one we used on our preliminary night. We were able to drive up through there. It was a good run.”

Madsen charged from 14th to a fourth-place result.

Momentum was on the Muddy sponsored team’s side entering Saturday’s A Main, but it didn’t play out as hoped.

“We just weren’t good enough,” Madsen said. “We struggled for grip in the first 25-lap segment. We made a couple of adjustments during the mandatory stop and the car was better, but we didn’t quite get it to where we needed.”

Madsen maintained a top 10 throughout the race before he got upside down in turns three and four with only two laps remaining.

“I hit the cushion, which was pretty heavy,” he said. “I went to hit the brake pedal to help steer it and there was no breaks. It brought the car around and it plowed into the cushion. It was unfortunate.”

Madsen was only two laps away from recording his sixth career top 10 during the marquee event. He was unable to restart the race and was credited with a 22nd-place finish.

The team will compete with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series this Friday at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., during the 2nd Leg of the Northern Tour and Saturday at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D., during the Duel in the Dakotas.
